District Attorney Steve Cornwell made national headlines this summer when he recommended pursuing murder charges against any person that traffics drugs that wind up killing another individual.

There were 53 drug-overdose deaths in Broome County during the first six months of the year, most of them due to heroin abuse.

Cornwell calls the heroin epidemic the greatest public health crisis in the history of Broome County.  It's overdose death rate is four times higher than the national average.
