Big Tobacco Files Suit Against City Over Anti-Smoking Posters

Big tobacco is fuming over graphic warning posters in city delis and convenience stores. The nation's three largest tobacco companies are filing suit against the city to block a rule mandating stores hang anti-smoking "Quit Smoking Today" posters. Tobacco companies, Phillip Morris, RJ Reynolds, and Lorillard Tobacco, claim the city Health Department rule violates the store owner's freedom of speech. Stores face a two-thousand-dollar fine for failing to display the signs, featuring decaying or cancerous body parts.
The city Health Department issued a statement that the point-of-purchase warnings are meant to warn those buying tobacco of the health consequences and offer help quitting. The city Law Department is reviewing the complaint, but confident the code will withstand legal scrutiny.
