Astronaut Releases Personal Letters From 9-11, As He Watched From Space

09.12.12 | Sarah Harnisch

NASA has released letters from the only American that wasn't on earth during the 9-11 terror attacks. Astronaut Frank Culbertson was stationed on the International Space Station when the World Trade Center towers were hit. A day later, he put his feelings in the form of a letter. He says-- "I found a window and grabbed the nearest camera, and focused on New York City. The smoke had an odd bloom. I believe we were looking at New York sometime after the collapse of the second tower. I can't imagine the scenes on the ground."
