As Summer Fun Begins, Swimmers Should Use Caution Around Pools
05.28.10 |
A lot of people will be jumping back into swimming pools over this long holiday weekend, but there's new information about pool safety that could keep some people out of the water. The Centers for Disease Control recently conducted a survey about the condition of public pools, like those run by local governments, at water parks, or in hotels. The CDC's Michele Hlavsa [[LAHV-suh]] says one in eight pools was closed because chlorine levels in the water were too low or the required safety equipment was missing. She says anyone who frequently visits a public pool should bring along quick-read test strips that confirm water quality. She also suggested that swimmers use the nose test. She says a properly maintained pool won't have a strong chlorine odor, because that smell actually comes from high levels of sweat and urine in the pool.
