Apple's iPhone May Be Heading To Verizon Wireless
04.27.09 |
Customers of Verizon wireless may be able to use the Apple iPhone on their network in the future. "USA Today" reports high-level discussions are underway between Apple and Verizon. The objective is to have an iPhone available that will work on that network sometime next year.
AT&T has an exclusive contract with Apple into 2010. However, Telecom experts think AT&T will fight hard to prevent Apple from making the iPhone available to another carrier and will try to extend the existing contract. The head of telecom research at Nielsen, Roger Entner, says, "breaking the (iPhone) exclusivity with AT&T is a huge thing."
AT&T has inked contracts with 1.6 million iPhone customers in the first quarter of this year. Forty-percent of those customers are new to the company.
On the other hand, Apple would be a huge winner if it does a deal with Verizon. It would have the potential to sell another 80-million telephones. The biggest winners would be cell customers, who would have more choices than ever.
