Appeals Court Ruling Limits Gitmo Inmates' Rights
04.08.09 |
There is a federal court ruling that appears to limit the rights of inmates at the Guantanamo prison camp. A U.S. appeals court in Washington has ruled that the executive branch -- not the courts -- has the sole authority to decide where Gitmo inmates will go once they are released.
The three-judge appeals panel also ruled that other federal judges cannot change the terms of detainee transfers to other countries, even if the inmates claim they would be imprisoned and tortured The decision was handed down in the case of group of Chinese Muslims who are slated for release, but claimed they would be persecuted if they were repatriated to China.
