Alabama Governor Says He Will Defend Religious Freedom

Alabama's new governor, Robert Bentley, created a media storm this week after he said anyone who wasn't a Christian was not his brother or sister. He held a press conference Wednesday to apologize to those he offended. He said, "The terminology that I used, I believe, seemed to disenfranchise other religions, and it was certainly not meant to do that." Some Christians are a bit put out, though, that he would issue an apology. Just hours after his Monday speech, he was flooded with complaints. The Birmingham Jewish Federation requested an expedited meeting and he got numerous calls and letters. The governor said he was speaking to a church audience, and was speaking as a private citizen. After his apology, he added, "I swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Alabama, and that includes protecting our right to worship as we please. I will always defend our freedom of religion."
