5 States Vote In Primaries Today
04.24.12 |
It's primary day and voters are heading to the polls in New York, Pennsylvania and three other states. Only Republicans are voting in New York's Presidential primary, but Republicans and Democrats are voting in multiple races in Pennsylvania. Voter turnout is expected to be light with Mitt Romney having all-but-officially sewn up the Republican presidential nomination, but many are eager to learn his pick for vice president. There is no Democratic presidential primary in any of the five states because President Obama is unopposed. The latest polls show the former Massachusetts governor with a commanding lead in New York, which has 95 delegates, the most of any of the five East Coast states holding primaries today. Romney was already favored to run up big vote totals, and delegate hauls in Connecticut, Delaware, New York and Rhode Island even before Santorum bowed out. However, Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Congressman Ron Paul will appear with Romney on the ballots in all five states. Pennsylvania was expected to be native son Rick Santorum's make-or-break contest, but he suspended his campaign on April 10th. Gingrich has picked up a few endorsements in Delaware, but the former House Speaker may be at the brink of dropping out of the race. Gingrich told NBC News Monday night, quote, "I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing." Gingrich said he would have to "reassess" his campaign depending on how he does in Delaware. The former Georgia congressman had said at GOP headquarters in Delaware on Monday that "Governor Romney is clearly the frontrunner but that doesn't mean he is inevitable." Polls are open until 9 p.m. Eastern.
