Whether it's in the water or in the paint, experts say lead can cause serious health problems.

Erie County, New York Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein says the brain toxin "could effect brain development" especially for children under 6-years-old.

She says in homes built before the 1980s you should run your water for at least a minute before drinking it to get the lead out.

The New York state Department of Health will test your water "free of charge" to see if you have a lead problem.
