Once envisioned by Walt Disney himself as an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow," the park opened on October 1st of 1982, eleven years after the Magic Kingdom transformed Central Florida's tourism industry. Several events are taking place at the park today to mark the anniversary, including a special extension of Epcot's nighttime fireworks show, Illuminations.
